IAKS member Fredrikstad certified as Global Active City

The City of Fredrikstad has been certified as a Global Active City (GAC) and member of the Active Wellbeing Initiative (AWI). The goal is to empower and engage citizens in order to adopt a more active and healthy lifestyle.

In Fredrikstad, the initiative is called Aktive Fredrikstad and is a part of the municipality's overall public health work. Through Global Active City, The City of Fredrikstad was certified in 2022 according to the international ISO standard (AWI 26102). There are only a few other cities in the world that have this status.

The long-term work is carried out in close cooperation between the municipality, NGOs and volunteers, educational institutions and business. Aktive Fredrikstad has partnered up with Østfold University College, Fredrikstad Business Association and several NGO’s.

With a clear mandate from the city council, Fredrikstad is at the starting point of a long-term programme. A key part of the ambitious action plan is to learn from the ideas, experiences and results of other cities. This will inspire Fredrikstad to achieve good results, as well as contribute to achieving the programme's ambitious goals. Through a mentoring agreement with the City of Liverpool (UK) Fredrikstad will be able to learn from several years of experience in working with increased physical activity in Liverpool's population.
