Sports facilities – sports halls, outdoor recreation, artificial ice rinks, swimming pools and the like – are highly complex and have costly ongoing operational requirements. Over a facility’s lifetime, operating costs exceed the construction costs by a wide margin. Pool experts Darryl Condon and Dr Stefan Kannewischer explain why careful planning is crucial.

The new building designed by the architects Czerner Göttsch Architekten in 2019 takes bathers on a journey back in time to the period of the original building, while, thanks to modern building services, the energy requirements of the new pool are significantly lower than those of its predecessor, despite the fact that the water surface area is twice as large.

In the interview, the designers of the modernization of Ohlsdorf Family Pool let us know about the challenges which they encountered. And they talk about the swimming hall dominated by earthy tones and pebble colours.

The aquatic centre comprises four pools and extensive fitness and wellness facilities and is the centrepiece of a major new recreational project in the Green Square district. The design sees the seamless integration of an urban beach pool into a park and surrounding landscape.
