Sustainable drainage for sports facilities with solutions from Hauraton
Advert by IAKS member HAURATON
Climate change and the resulting challenges – such as heavy rainfall, flooding and overloaded sewer systems – call for forward-looking concepts in rainwater management. Sports facilities play a key role in this, as their large surface areas and specific construction features offer potential for sustainable drainage solutions. With their Sportfix product range, Hauraton provide a dedicated portfolio of drainage systems for stadiums, sports grounds and athletic facilities. Within this range, the Sportfix slotted channel stands out as a discreet and long-lasting all-rounder for surface drainage on running tracks.
A recent example of successful implementation can be found at the Asnyka Sports Centre in Katowice, Poland. The facility underwent extensive modernisation and was equipped with a state-of-the-art drainage system. Sportfix slotted channels made of recycled polypropylene (PP) were used here – combined with Sportfix sand traps, soft kerbs for injury protection and a water jump.
This solution ensures a flush, almost invisible integration into the track surface while providing reliable water drainage. The material is UV and frost resistant, corrosion-free and fully recyclable – a clear contribution to resource-efficient construction.

Thanks to the KTL-coated slotted gratings, the connection to the running track surface remains permanently stable. EPDM slot inserts enable the easy application of the track coating, followed by precise opening of the drainage slots after installation. The composite covers, which can also serve as track markings, feature lateral openings for safe water flow into the channels. Sump units serve as additional maintenance points and simplify servicing
during operation.
Functionality meets sustainability
Sportfix systems are not only technically sophisticated but also environmentally sound. The use of recycled materials, their long service life and easy maintenance help reduce resource consumption and create lasting value. In addition, the channels can be flexibly combined with aluminium blind covers or composite markings – allowing for maximum planning freedom and a clean, safe design of sports surfaces.

A model project with exemplary character
The Katowice project demonstrates how modern rainwater management can sustainably improve the operation of sports facilities. Thanks to Hauraton’s solutions, running tracks and playing fields remain functional and safe even during heavy rainfall. For municipalities, planners and facility operators, Sportfix systems provide a future-ready concept for durable, resilient and environmentally responsible sports grounds.
