Daylight and ventilation for the renovation of sports buildings
Many sports facilities no longer meet current structural and functional requirements. The roof is often the weak point. With the fiberglass system Grillodur®, VELUX Commercial enhances daylight, indoor climate, and safety in existing structures.
Many municipal sports halls from the 1960s to the 1980s are due for extensive renovation. High energy costs, outdated building systems, and limited flexibility significantly restrict operations. On top of that, new demands have emerged: today’s sports halls are multifunctional spaces that host school and club sports, health-oriented programs, inclusive activities, and open community formats.

The lightweight fiberglass system Grillodur® from VELUX Commercial meets the key requirements of modern sports buildings. Designed for increased mechanical loads, it offers limited ball-impact resistance as well as tested hail and fall-through safety. Only the flap areas require additional protection.
Its homogeneous, glare-free daylight creates ideal lighting conditions—an advantage for visual orientation during sports activities. With a self-weight of around 10 kg/m², the system is ideal for renovations with limited load capacity. It offers excellent thermal insulation (Ug up to 1.1 W/m²K, g-values up to 0.21). The high degree of prefabrication allows for short installation times and minimal disruption to operations. Thanks to its system versatility, continuous rooflights, ridge or sawtooth roofs, and constructions with integrated smoke and heat exhaust (SHEV) flaps can all be realized.
During the renovation of the sports hall at the Kaufmännische Schule Öhringen, the distinctive sawtooth roof character was retained despite the dismantling of the old roof structure. Five custom-made Grillodur® rooflights follow the conical roof line and include 20 flaps for natural ventilation and night cooling—improving light quality, energy efficiency, and indoor climate.

In the extension of the “Centre Culturel et Sportif Atert” in Bertrange, four semi-transparent Grillodur® rooflights provide homogeneous daylight. Integrated ventilation and smoke and heat extraction (SHEV) flaps ensure fresh air and safety.
Modern daylight systems like Grillodur® not only enhance energy efficiency and safety but also open up new perspectives for sports facility architecture.
