Diverse and successful activity areas on the agenda on 8 November

Properly operating leisure infrastructure in large metropolitan cities

Experts from Denmark, Germany and the United Kingdom will discuss challenges and exchange expertise in this workshop held on 6 November at 2.00 pm at the 26th IAKS Congress. Often large urban areas suffer from outdated indoor and outdoor facilities that are difficult to effectively program and maintain. The process of offering meaningful programs and facilities is complicated by ongoing community growth and diversified expectations.

Varkenoord ClubHouse in Rotterdam by NL Architects

Three sports clubs with different backgrounds and ‘club cultures’ are joining forces on the new Rotterdam sports campus: two soccer clubs (FC IJsselmonde and Overmaas) and Feyenoord Hockey Club are sharing a common facility. NL Architects are positioning the building between the two main soccer fields and the adjoining pitches. The clubhouse attempts to exploit its specific position.

Streetmekka street sports and cultural centre in Viborg by Effekt

Streetmekka is a new cultural destination offering a wide variety of facilities for self-organized sports like parkour, skate, bouldering, basketball, trial and a series of customized workshop areas for music production, DJ’ing, an animation studio, fabrication lab and various artist studios and wood- and metalworkshops. Architecture firm Effekt has transformed an abandoned windmill factory into a vibrant hub for street sports and youth culture.

40 architects, municipality representatives and IAKS ­Executive Board members gained unique insight into the innovative sports and leisure facilities in Denmark’s capital from 24 to 25 May 2018.
At each of the ten facilities, the architect and/or the operator was present to give first-hand information and to answer technical questions.
