"Active Urban Spaces" at IAKS UK & Ireland conference, 2-3 October

"Active Places: Building a sustainable future"

With the energy of the ongoing Olympic games in Paris, the topic of sport and increasing participation is at the forefront of the agenda for local authorities, universities and sporting bodies.

"Active Urban Spaces" will be the theme of the first session of Day two of the Dublin event, where innovative strategies for activating urban spaces and increasing participation in sport will be challenged and discussed.

Opening the morning session, Don Daly, Project Manager at Dublin City Council, and Brian McNeice, Senior Managing Director at Teneo, will discuss the challenges addressed and ideas developed as part of the recently published "More Active, More Often: Dublin City Council Sports Plan 2024-29".

Ola Mattsson, Development Consultant at the Danish Foundation for Culture and Sports, will offer a Danish Perspective to the discussion, illustrating how their avant-garde approach to the design and planning of culture and sports facilities moves away from the conventional approach to focus on reflecting the cultural diversity and new patterns of everyday life.

Completing the session, Ger O’Reilly, Outdoor Education Instructor at the Ballyfermot Youth Service, will speak about the success of the award-winning Le Fanu Skate and Play Park. The community initiative delivered a state-of-the-art, highly-utilised amenity for the youth of Ballyfermot that caters for a range of children from toddlers to teens.

Day two will take place at the world-class Aviva Stadium and will include a stadium tour.
