2022 IAKS Conference: Innovative outdoor activity areas
Odense, Denmark 5-6 October 2022

05. - 06.10.2022
Register now

Outdoor activity infrastructure requires less budget than indoor facilities but can serve a larger number of users. Authorities are realising that physical activity spaces in urban areas and in nature improve life and attract citizens and tourists. What does “Active living” mean for developing cities and providing infrastructure? Which good practices can we learn from? How to offer outdoor infrastructure and preserve nature at the same time?

With the support of The University of Southern Denmark (SDU) and the two IAKS Expert Circles on Urban Activity Areas and on Nature Activity Areas, we invite national and international executives to attend a comprehensive programme including facility visits.

Delegates: Municipal parks and sports departments, urban planners, landscape architects, scientists

Conference language: English

The event opens on 5 October with the guided tours of Athletics Exploratorium and SDU Sports Science facilities. The networking dinner on Wednesday night is the perfect moment to connect, network and create new ties to both national and international experts from the sports and leisure facility sector.

The conference on 6 October will see the importance of physical activity opportunities for outdoor physical activity; walkable cities as drivers of change; Trail Centres for outdoor sports in the cities of Kolding and Silkeborg; and the multi-user facility at Fuglsang lake Water as an example of sports for all. Two panel discussions will explore „Active living and urban development“ and „Outdoor infrastructure for active living“; rounded up by the impact of climate change and sustainability on outdoor activity areas.

The Athletics Exploratorium by KEINGART – space activators was awarded the 2015 IOC IPC IAKS architecture prize in Gold. It demonstrates how traditional sports can be given new inspiration and new content by combining stimulating design with modern technology and the culture of healthy urban living.

Athletics Exploratorium is a training facility for serious athletes, a laboratory for physical rehabilitation and research, an everyday playground, a popular tourist attraction and a place of interest that you visit if you happen to be passing by. The ambition of the project has been to connect many types of activity, thus addressing many types of users and needs.
