Sports facilities – sports halls, outdoor recreation, artificial ice rinks, swimming pools and the like – are highly complex and have costly ongoing operational requirements. Over a facility’s lifetime, operating costs exceed the construction costs by a wide margin. Pool experts Darryl Condon and Dr Stefan Kannewischer explain why careful planning is crucial.

The new building designed by the architects Czerner Göttsch Architekten in 2019 takes bathers on a journey back in time to the period of the original building, while, thanks to modern building services, the energy requirements of the new pool are significantly lower than those of its predecessor, despite the fact that the water surface area is twice as large.

The aquatic centre comprises four pools and extensive fitness and wellness facilities and is the centrepiece of a major new recreational project in the Green Square district. The design sees the seamless integration of an urban beach pool into a park and surrounding landscape.

The company is dedicated to the design, development and technical support in the construction of sports facilities and installations in general. Sportocioplus produces sports flooring and equipment, technical, vinyl, linoleum and rubber flooring, as well as artificial and natural grass for both sports and decorative use.

Coogee Surf Life Saving Club Clubhouse in Coogee NSW, Australia

The redesign makes the club fully accessible and inclusive for the first time in its 113-year history. People in wheelchairs can now be lifesavers. Coogee SLSC is not only set to become the pilot site for a state-wide initiative training surf lifesavers of different abilities but has also been awarded the 2021 IPC IAKS Distinction.

Agustín García Puga from Argentina has been elected IAKS LAC President for the term 2021 to 2023. To herald a generational change, the long-time former President of IAKS LAC, Jorge Ehlers Hodar from Chile, has taken up the position of Director at the beginning of the new term.

27th IAKS Congress sets the tone

Four days of brain food with high-calibre speakers and inspiring interventions: Over 340 guests and delegations from 34 countries, plus an additional 85 unique users who accessed the event online, took part in the 27th edition of the IAKS Congress, allowing delegates from all over the world to find out about how to develop healthy and sustainable communities.

At the festive gala on 26 October 2021, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and the International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS) presented the much-coveted medals for innovative, sustainable and inclusive sports and leisure architecture.

IAKS General Assembly elects new Executive Board

The IAKS General Assembly on 27.10.2021 took place in hybrid form for the first time. President Dr Stefan Kannewischer reported on the activities of the Executive Board and the IAKS Office. Treasurer Holger Kortbek reported on a gratifying growth in membership, despite the challenging situation due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ariake Gymnastics Centre in Tokyo, Japan

The Ariake Gymnastics Centre is designed to perform a dual function: first, it has served as a temporary facility for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. Post-games, it will be converted into a permanent exhibition hall. Nikken Sekkei and Shimizu Corporation have designed a light and gentle facility in harmony with the surroundings.

The IAKS pool expert circle has compiled exemplary projects ranging from Australia to the United Kingdom. They were presented to the public for the first time during the International Swimming Pool and Wellness Forum taking place from 26 to 29 October in Cologne, Germany.

Bredäng Park in Stockholm

A pergola with stepped seating encloses the north-east boundaries of the park. It was custom-made for the project and integrates lighting in its steel structure to ensure that the site can be used throughout the day and during all seasons. A sound system with a Bluetooth receiver allows visitors to play music of their choice.
